Answers about subscribing, signing in, your account and the newsletter.

Subscribing

How do I subscribe?

Enter your email in the Subscribe box on the home page, or use the Subscribe button at the top of any page. There's no name or password to fill in. We'll email you a link: open it to confirm your email and you're in.

Is it free?

Yes. Membership is free.

What do I get as a member?
  • Full access to members-only posts.
  • New posts and newsletters by email.
  • Your own account, where you can manage your newsletter and security settings.
I didn't get the confirmation email.

Check your spam or promotions folder. The link expires after 15 minutes, so if it's old, just subscribe again with the same email and we'll send a fresh one. If you ask for several in a short time, wait a minute before trying again.

I already have an account but signed up again. Is that a problem?

No. If your email already has an account, we send you a sign-in link instead of creating a second account.

Signing in

How do I sign in?

Use Sign in at the top of the page. There are three ways in:

  1. Email me a sign-in link: no password needed.
  2. Sign in with a passkey, if you've added one.
  3. Your email and password, if you've set one.
My sign-in link doesn't work.

Sign-in links work once and expire after 15 minutes. They also stop working if you change your email address. Request a new one from the Sign in page.

Open the link on the device and browser where you want to be signed in.

Why does the sign-in link show a button instead of signing me in straight away?

Some email security tools open links automatically. The Sign in button makes sure only you can use your link.

I turned on two-factor authentication. Does the email link skip it?

No. After using a sign-in link you'll still be asked for your two-factor code.

It says I've made too many attempts.

To protect accounts, sign-in links and sign-ups are limited to a few per minute. Wait a minute and try again.

Passwords and security

Do I need a password?

No. You can always sign in with an email link. A password is optional.

How do I set or change my password?

Go to Account → Security. If you don't have a password yet, choose Set a password (no current password needed). To change an existing one, enter your current password first.

I forgot my password.

Use Forgot your password? on the Sign in page, or just sign in with an email link instead.

Why am I asked to confirm it's me?

Some account pages, like Security, ask you to confirm it's you. If you have a password, type it in. If you don't, press Email me a confirmation link and open the link on the same device.

Can I use two-factor authentication or a passkey?

Yes. Both are under Account → Security.

Your account

Where are my account settings?

Once you're signed in, the Account button at the top right opens your account:

  • Overview: your newsletter status and the latest posts.
  • Profile: your name and email.
  • Newsletter: subscribe or unsubscribe.
  • Security: password, two-factor authentication and passkeys.

Log out is at the top of the account page.

Do I have to give my name?

No. Your name is optional. If it's blank, we show the first part of your email address instead.

How do I change my email address?

Go to Account → Profile and update it. You'll then need to verify the new address. Sign-in links sent to your old address stop working.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Account → Profile → Delete account (at the bottom). Confirm with your password, or by typing your email address if you don't have a password. Your account is permanently deleted and you're signed out everywhere.

The newsletter

How do I unsubscribe?

Use the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of any newsletter email and press Unsubscribe. No sign-in needed. You can also turn the switch off under Account → Newsletter. Many email apps also show their own one-click Unsubscribe button.

How do I subscribe again?

Sign in and turn the switch back on under Account → Newsletter.

I'm subscribed but not getting newsletters.
  • Check that Account → Newsletter is switched on.
  • Make sure you've confirmed your email (newsletters only go to confirmed addresses).
  • Look in your spam or promotions folder.
  • If emails to your address bounced in the past, or a newsletter was marked as spam, we stop sending to protect your inbox. Contact the site owner to have your address unblocked.
What happens if I mark a newsletter as spam?

You're unsubscribed automatically and won't get more newsletters.

Reading and finding posts

What are members-only posts?

Posts marked Members only show a short preview to visitors. Sign in (membership is free) to read the whole post. If you're signed in but haven't confirmed your email yet, you'll be asked to confirm it first.

How do I see older posts?

The home page shows the five newest posts. Press See more posts under them to load five more, as many times as you like. Tag pages and search results show ten at a time with Older posts and Newer posts buttons.

What is "Keep reading" at the end of a post?

Up to three more posts you might like, picked by shared tags (the ones with the most tags in common first), then the newest posts.

How do I search?

Start typing in the search box on the home page: matching posts appear as you type. Use the arrow keys and Enter to open one, or press Enter to see all results. The magnifying glass at the top left opens the search page, where results update as you type. Search looks through post titles, summaries, tags, and the text of public posts.

How do I search this Help page?

Type in the box at the top: questions filter as you type, and only answers containing every word you typed are shown.

Is there an RSS feed?

Yes. Use the RSS link in the footer (/feed) in your feed reader. Members-only posts show only their summary there.
